Excellent Book. Belongs on Your Bookshelf.
By Michael Wischmeyer
Courant's 500-page text isn't entirely appropriate for the layman. Its target market includes those that fancy reading and learning arithmetic and have an honest background through precalculus or higher. "What is Mathematics?" could be a arithmetic book, not a book concerning arithmetic.
"What is Mathematics?" isn't a brand new book. it absolutely was 1st revealed by Oxford University Press in 1941 with later editions in 1943, 1945, and 1947. sensible quality soft cowl copies are still in print as Oxford Paperbacks.
The authors indicate that it's no means that necessary to "plow through it page by page, chapter by chapter". I absolutely agree. I even have skipped around, jumping to chapters of explicit interest, however I even have currently scan nearly each chapter.
I initially skipped to page a hundred sixty five and delved directly into projective geometry (chapter IV), proceeded to topology (chapter V), and then jumped backwards to the start to explore the speculation of numbers. when moving to geometry, I finally came to the later chapters on functions and limits, maxima and minima, and therefore the calculus.
Courant engages the reader in discussions on mathematical ideas instead of specializing in applications and downside solving. "What is Mathematics?" could be a nice textbook for college kids that have completed a year or additional of calculus and want to tug all of their mathematical learning along before moving on to additional advanced studies. i think that it might even be welcomed by students that have completed an undergraduate degree in arithmetic.
I cannot resist quoting Albert Einstein's investigate what's Mathematics? - "A lucid illustration of the basic ideas and ways of the full field of arithmetic...Easily understandable."
Richard Courant was a highly revered mathematician. He taught in Germany and in Cambridge and was director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences at big apple University (now renamed the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences). Courant has authored alternative widely acclaimed mathematical texts together with ways of Mathematical Physics (co-authored with David Hilbert) and his common Differential and Integral Calculus.
